Macau Urban Renewal Limited (MUR) Board Members have recently been to the Iao Hon community and visited Iao Hon Estate residents and businesses to give festive greetings and exchange views on redevelopment works.

Through regular visits, MUR is able to better understand property owners’ thoughts on redevelopment, the conditions of the estate and hygiene of living environment but the key for urban renewal to move forward still relies on society’s involvement and consensus.

MUR Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Directors Leong Keng Seng and Board Member Sheng Li as well as Urban Planner Tam Hoi Ian visited residents and business operators Kat Cheong House and Hong Tai House in Iao Hon Estate where they discussed topics such as the percentage of consent required from property owners for redevelopment to go ahead, urban planning, reconstruction of shop units and the legal system for urban renewal.

During the visit, MUR also inspected the facilities, amenities and surrounding hygiene conditions of the two buildings in the estate, gradaully sorting out matters that could be problematic during the process of urban renewal.

To date, MUR has collected 55 percent of the property owners’ contacts. MUR staff will continue to visit the neighbourhood and distribute infographics to every household and leave MUR’s means of contact to facilitate owners to get in touch with the company. During their recent visits, MUR staff noticed there are slightly more property owners present at the estate.

Through promotional campaigns and site visits, the company encourages property owners and residents at the estate to form a neighbours’ contact point in order to collect the remaining 45 percent of owners’ contact information.

MUR is working on Iao Hon Estate’s redevelopment under the current legal framework. The success of redevelopment and the progress of urban renewal largely rely on the engagement of property owners for a consensus to be reached. MUR sincerely calls on all owners to contact the company so to create conditions favourable for the advancement of Iao Hon’s redevelopment.

MUR is also working on community education about urban renewal, sharing successful urban renewal projects from around the world through multi-media channels so to let the public know more about the concept of urban renewal and the importance of community engagement, as well as to better understand their role in the process of urban renewal.
